Qualcomm buys Airgo to get closer to MIMO

Qualcomm is wading deeper and deeper into the Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) wireless field with its purchase of Airgo, the creator of the MIMO standard. Qualcomm probably hopes to incorporate Airgo's 802.11b/g/n wireless technology into its CDMA chips to give carriers the best of both wireless data (and voice) worlds.

Qualcomm already sees that the future of wireless data (and perhaps voice) will be using WLAN technology in some form, and the purchase of Airgo seems to confirm that vision. Airgo's CEO said "This acquisition enables integrated products with wireless [local area network] and wireless [wide area network] capabilities to deliver a seamless-connectivity experience for users."

I love it when a CEO calls his customers "users".
