Alexandria, Virginia officials have selected EarthLink as the company to build its municipal wireless network. The City Council will make the announcement tomorrow at its scheduled meeting. The official awarding of the project will be made in December after a period for public review and comment.
EarthLink will build a 16-square-mile network that will be accessible to all residents and visitors. In addition, the company will offer discounted access at $9.95 a month for qualified, low-income residents and will provide free public access in roughly two dozen areas, which have yet to be determined.
It's another win for EarthLink as it sits atop the citywide wireless network marketplace. The competition is getting stronger, so we should be seeing a flurry of similar announcements in the coming days.
