Cellular service coming to Big Dig tunnels

If you find yourself driving in Boston next summer, you'll be able to talk on your cellphones while passing under any of the Big Dig tunnels.

The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority has struck an agreement with Cingular, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon to provide service at a cost of roughly $1.57 million with yearly fees of $140,000 each for the four wireless providers.

According to the terms of the agreement, it will cost up to $7.6 million to hook up the tunnels for service, and operating and management costs will run about $100,000 annually.

As with everything else concerned with the Big Dig, this agreement was years in the making. However, the deal is finally done and drivers and passengers will be able to carry on their conversations while navigating the area.
