Cellphones making classical music--what'll they think of next?

This story is another one of those signs of the coming apocalypse.

This past weekend, the Chicago Sinfonietta debuted the Concertino for Cellular Phones and Symphony Orchestra. Basically, it was a classical music piece for cellphones featuring members of the orchestra along with audience participation. Onstage, a series of lights alerted audience members to activate their rings during various points--red for the balcony and green for the orchestra seats--for snippets from composers such as Strauss, Bartok, and Brahms.

I guess since most of us want our cellphones to do just about anything, why not be part of an orchestra? I don't know quite what to make of all this, but if people are entertained by it, then by all means, enjoy yourself.
