It's put up or shut up time for Google's fledgling WiFi service as it will soon undergo beta testing in Mountain View, California.
The company has recruited a few hundred "Trusted Testers" to take the free network out for a spin, which is planned to be launched to the entire city by the end of the summer. Transmitters have been placed on roughly 370 light poles around the city, so it should give testers the opportunity to see how the network operates in a number of settings.
Of course, this is an important step for Google as it moves into the citywide wireless marketplace. If they are successful in their home town, it certainly would bode well for them and EarthLink as they begin working on the San Francisco network.
The next few weeks will indeed prove a lot as to whether Google has the "right stuff" for municipal WiFi.
