It's about time! New York City's Economic Development Corporation announced it will be conducting a feasibility study to determine whether a citywide wireless network can be effectively developed and deployed within the city.
Unbeknownst to many people, the commission released a RFP in mid-June with a deadline for responses set for July 21. More than likely the RFP is more of a request for information. It doesn't seem that city officials are ready to sit down and really pore over detailed RFPs without a foundation as to what would be required to set these networks up from a feasibility study.
As we've said here many times before, New York City is the big one when it comes to wireless networks. When the city is truly ready to put out a "real" RFP, there will be an avalanche of responses and the city will have a myriad of solutions to choose from.

1. I wrote two posts on this, one at Webmetricsguru.com and another on SmartMobs.com. I really hope NYC does get a wireless network soon - it would greatly help the quality of life in New York - esp - Ecommerce and on the fly kinds of projects.
