It's certainly a big payday for Clearwire as Intel and Motorola announced they are investing $900 million into Craig McCaw's company in order to foster development of Clearwire's WiMax network capabilities.
According to both companies, the investment is to bring high-speed wireless internet access to people anywhere they are. Intel, which has been a major proponent of WiMax for quite a while now is investing $600 million into Clearwire and will gain a minority stake in the company. Motorola's $300 million investment also includes plans to sell wireless networking equipment to Clearwire.
As a result of this action, Clearwire is canceling the IPO they announced this spring. It appears that both Intel and Motorola are banking on McCaw and his company to bring WiMax to the masses. Time will tell if the investment was worth it.
