With 213 mobile virtual network operators now in operation worldwide -- and another 34 ready to launch -- the question is this: Just how much is enough? It's hard to image that all these MVNOs can differentiate themselves enough to gain the customer base needed for future long-term success. With a handful of global wireless carriers that need to support all these MVNOs (insofar as the actual network backend), there are 51 MVNOs here in the United States even. The battle for all of these MVNOs is, and will be, to market service and features in such a way that customers see higher value than just going to a national wireless carriers for basically the same thing. With newer data networks, however, MVNOs may be able to more fully compete on newer, flashier features.
