Wavion Networks says it has developed a new technology that will reduce the performance and penetration problems that can develop when deploying a citywide wireless network. The company's custom-designed ASICs and embedded software has been adapted to outdoor environments where interference, weather, and automotive traffic can disrupt standard wireless signals. It also is built to provide better penetration into buildings.
Wavion's platform leverages six antennas and six radio transceivers into a single access point which, the company claims, extends the range of wireless signals from 600 feet to up to 1,500 feet. As a result, Wavion says that fewer access points are needed to cover a city, which reduces overall cost. The platform is currently being tested in San Jose.
As more cities continue to look toward deploying wireless networks, anything that can be done to reduce cost will certainly foster a closer look. Whether this technology from Wavion proves effective is up in the air, but if does show that fewer access points will be needed in a given area, you can bet this company will certainly be busy filling orders.
