UMTS and WiMAX converge, or so says Airvana

You know several partially-competing technologies are hot potatoes when companies start dipping their toes into both at the same time. Airvana appears to be doing just that - they're a major player in the EV-DO space in the CDMA world (Verizon, Sprint Nextel, Alltel, etc.) and yet see a future combining UMTS wireless cellular technology and WiMAX broadband IP solutions.

Airvana is talking about access gateways using both UMTS and WiMAX, since they do have quite a bit of experience in IP - and who wouldn't want to be a part of SIP-based VoIP solutions with that technology getting so much attention lately? Perhaps Airvana sees voice moving from traditional cellular to SIP using VoIP over broadband WiMAX - that's a lot of acronyms! But seriously, they may be investing in the future of voice - wherever it lives.
