Texas town using wireless network to remotely read water meters

The city of Burleson, Texas has inked a deal with Chevron Energy Solutions to develop and deploy a WiFi network while leveraging it to automatically read water meters. According to both parties, a pilot program will be conducted to test the possibility of using automatic meter reading (AWR) technology to enable city workers to read water meters remotely, thereby saving the city time and money by not having them manually reading the meters.

As with most municipalities who are pursuing these types of projects, the possibility of opening up new avenues of city services access and business opportunities are the main reasons why Burleson is moving ahead with this wireless network. However, it will be interesting to see how this pilot program for reading water meters remotely will work out, since other localities may use this as an example of how they could leverage wireless technology to streamline their own processes.
