SBA
Communications Corp., a wireless tower owner and site acquisition company that makes it possible to have those
large, monstrous towers that allow all our voice calls and SMS messages to go through, is buying competitor AAT
Technologies, which is the fifth-largest independent cellular tower company in the U.S.This acquisition will broaden SBA's tower owndership quite a bit (over 1,500 towers) as well as give them over 250 more revenue-producing towers (co-location, leased space, etc.). With this acquisition coming right at this time, one has to wonder the strategic decisions that produced this buyout. With the cellular world showing no signs of cooling down, and with AT&T buying Bellsouth, and with Verizon's upcoming acquisition of another competitor still on the hot plate, there is a lot of wireless activity in 2006 going forward.
