This week voters in Phoenix, Arizona will be voting on a number of bond issues, and one that should
be drawing a great deal of interest is an initiative regarding the city's infrastructure. The proposed $147.4 million
outlay is designated for road improvements, storm sewer projects, and (drumroll please) citywide wireless
Internet access.
As has been written in this space many times before, a number of communities surrounding Phoenix are in the process of deploying wireless networks, including Tempe, Scottsdale, Chandler, and Gilbert. Mesa is also making moves toward municipal WiFi as well. It makes perfect sense for the big town to join the wireless party.
The Valley of the Sun has seen continued economic growth over the last 15 years, and it stands to reason that Phoenix is poised to get in on the citywide wireless movement. The city has seen many companies sprout up in the area and many thousands of new residents as well, so this is as good a time as any to provide wireless access to the various constituencies that make up Phoenix.
