Intel's WiMAX Party Train - All Aboard

A pretty interesting demonstration of WiMAX technology happened this week at the Intel Developer's Forum conference in the Bay Area when Sean Maloney, and Intel VP, rode around the stage on a scooter outfitted with a WiMAX-carded laptop computer, getting instant weather and webcam data sent to his laptop at 2Mbps speeds while scooting all around the place during his keynote speech. Finally, dispensing with the usual marketing-babble of half-truths and producing an actual demonstration.

Intel has said WiMAX cards will be out later this year, and it was interesting that this Forbes story pointed out Maloney as saying WiFi and WiMAX chipsets will merge within three years. This prediction sounds about right - it makes all the sense in the world to merge these two wireless technologies. As we've stated before, WiMAX has the potential to be a very disruptive wireless broadband technology, for several industries. We'll see what happens in the next two years.
