Cable Industry Devising Strategy to Compete With WiFi

Well, you just knew sooner or later that either the cable or telecom industries would do something to compete with the growing citywide wireless network other than lobbying against it in government settings.

There's a new initiative known as CableRoam being developed by the cable industry trade group Cablelabs that is looking to leverage various wireless technologies, including WiFi and WiMax, in order to offer wireless services to their customers.

CableLabs is not saying much about this development, but suffice to say it appears the cable industry, rather than trying to deny the wireless service providers the right to sell the wares, is now set to compete against them.

It will be interesting to see what this initiative actually features and what it can or cannot do in comparison to WiFi.
