On the verge of the 3GSM World
Congress set to begin tomorrow, today's International Herald Tribune has an interesting story on
the debate over which mobile standard would fit best in emerging third-generation networks. It's not so much a GSM vs.
CDMA vs. WCDMA debate because many manufacturers have at least dipped a toe in all three camps--it's really doing the
R&D to develop handsets that would appeal to the most people worldwide.
When you get down to the nitty-gritty, do consumers really care what standard their cellphones are based on? What everyone wants is the ability to place and receive calls from anywhere they choose, and as some in the industry are increasingly saying, consumers really don't care about the acronyms.
